PEOPLE IN PROJECT 1.3 METAHEART

Project leader is Dr Ingeborg Brouwer from the Wageningen Center for Food Sciences. She is a nutritionist with expertise in the fields of n-3 fatty acids and cardiac arrhythmia, and the field of folate and homocysteine. During her post-doctoral fellowship her main task was the coordination of a multicentre European clinical trial investigating the effects of n-3 fatty acids on cardiac arrhythmia in patients with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD). At present, she manages a major research project on the relation between dietary n-3 fatty acids, heart rhythm, and sudden death.

Key persons in METAHEART:

Dr Ruben Coronel is senior investigator at the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam the Netherlands and has published in the major cardiovascular journals.  He has been editor of Cardiovascular Research, the basic science journal of the European Society of Cardiology from 1997 until 2002. His prime field of research is to unravel the mechanisms of arrhythmias and sudden death, both in the experimental and the clinical setting.

Professor Ronald P. Mensink from the University of Maastricht received his PhD-degree on a study on the effects of monounsaturated fatty acids on high-density and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and blood pressure in healthy men and women. He holds a special chair in ‘Molecular Nutrition’. He is leader of Division 1 ‘Nutrition and Metabolism’ from NUTRIM (‘Nutrition and Toxicology Research Institute Maastricht’). His studies are in particular focused on the health effects of dietary lipids.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
