Partner 13: TNO Nutrition and Food Research (TNO)

TNO Nutrition and Food Research is a part of TNO, the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research and is active as a contract research organisation. In the area ‘Quality of Life’ we can rely on the combined expertise of some 1100 colleagues, of which approximately 700 in our own institute. As an active partner of the international food industry, TNO Nutrition and Food Research has proven its value for research and development for more than 60 years. Our institute is focused on five main issues: (1) Food and health, (2) Food and safety, (3) Product innovation, (4) R&D of pharmaceuticals, and (5) Registration and safety of products. For TNO it is important to translate fundamental knowledge into usable know how for the industry, therefore we closely co-operate with universities in The Netherlands and abroad. In this way the  industry is supported to strengthen their competitiveness. We serve our clients by being acknowledged leaders in topics such as product innovation, analysis, nutrigenomics, metabolimics, bioinformatics, systems biology, and toxicology. The Physiological Sciences Department is participating in SEAFOODplus. It has more than ten years of experience in the development, validation and application of dynamic, computer-controlled laboratory systems simulating the gastrointestinal tract of humans (babies, adults, elderly) and mono-gastric animals. These systems (TIM) are used for research on nutritional quality, efficacy of functional foods, and food safety of separate ingredients as well as complete meals. TIM-studies are presented in more than 25 double refereed scientific journals.
