Professor Gertjan Schaafsma, PhD, is the coordinator of RTD Pillar 1, Seafood and human nutrition. He is a senior nutrition scientist, connected to the Wageningen University and employed by TNO Nutrition and Food Research as business development director. He has 11 years experience as manager of the Nutrition Physiology Department of this institute and is a member of the Dutch National Health Council. His chair at the Wageningen University involves education and research on the development and efficacy testing of functional foods and the safety assessment of novel foods. He is a member of the novel food committee of the National Health Council. In his function at TNO, he maintains contacts with the major food companies at the strategic level.
