ITD 1 Communication to Industry, Consumer and Public Administration; Socio-economic, Gender and Ethical aspects

Dr. Lucay Han-Ching is the coordinator of the ITD Pillar 1. He is acting as deputy-director of Living Resources in IFREMER, France. The research at the department includes activities in the field of fisheries, aquaculture, fish processing and socio-economics. He has been the head of fish processing department for ten years. He has considerable experience in management of research and industrial projects and coordinated the European project FAR UP 1.216. He initiated and coordinated the surimi project with industry and contributed to the development of the surimi industry in France particularly for the surimi produced on board from Blue Whiting. He initiated and coordinated the collaboration with the fish industry association CITPPM, which is still running. He is also acting as expert in the evaluation commission ‘Food additives, aroma and processing aids’ at the French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA), and is member of the French National Food Council (CNA) which advices the government on food policy including the scientific, socio-economic, ethical and political dimension.

ITD 2 Advanced training and mobility activity

Dr. Maria Leonor Nunes is the coordinator of the ITD Pillar 2. She has a position as Head of Department of Technological Innovation and Upgrading of Fish Products, National Research Institute on Agriculture and Fisheries (IPIMAR), and Professor of Quality of Seafood Products at the University of Algarve of Portugal. She has participated in more than 15 EU projects concerned with fish products preservation, processing, and quality and safety. She has a solid experience in the application of new technologies for seafood preservation and processing, in the assessment of seafood quality/safety and its characterisation in terms of biochemical and nutritional composition. She and her team have published a substantial number of papers over the last two years. She has been the national coordinator of 4 CRAFT projects and since 2000 has been responsible for the links between research and fish industry in Portugal.

ITD 3 Demonstration and SME involvement

Dr. Begoña Pérez-Villarreal is the coordinator of ITD Pillar 3. She is Director of Business of AZTI-Food Research Division, Spain. She has been the project leader of more than 80 national and international projects, has 50 publications within Food and Fish Technology and is co-authoress of 5 new food product patents. She is a member of the board of the Spanish Food Microbiology Society and of different other societies and committees (AENOR, FEDIT). Further, she is an advisor and evaluator for several councils and administrations for strategic and R&D plans for the food and fish sector. She has been involved in R&D&I activities and technology transfer to the food and fish industry in the last 14 years, particularly in the SME area, concerning quality issues and product development.

ITD 4 Creation of new business activities

Dr. Sjöfn Sigurgisladottir is the coordinator of ITD Pillar 4. She is the Managing Director of MATIS, Icelandic Food Research. She has been project leader for more than 20 research and development projects.  She has been the coordinator for two EU projects (one CRAFT project and one research project) and two projects financed by the Nordic Industry found. She has 15 publications in reviewed international journals. The work has been mainly focused on new products and new/improved technology, specifically concerning quality and safety of food products. She has extensive experience in applied research in collaboration with the industry and development work for the industry. She is a member of the Council of the National Research Fund.

ITD 5 Dissemination

Professor Jörg Oehlenschläger, PhD, is the coordinator of ITD Pillar 5. He holds the position of scientific director at the Federal Research Centre for Nutrition and Food in Germany. He is an internationally renowned expert in fish quality, fish composition and fish technology. He has undertaken research in the field of functional components in seafood, such as selenium, iodine, and zinc. He has published more than 200 papers on seafood quality and is co-editor of two books in this area.

ITD 6 Intellectual Property Protection

Dr. Mercedes Careche is the coordinator of the ITD horizontal activity. She works at Instituto del Frío, CSIC, Spain, where she is an Associate Professor in Food Science & Technology. She has been a project leader for several research projects, including projects supported by the EU. She has served as an evaluator for research boards, nationally and internationally, and has served as a member of several academic examination boards. Her work has concentrated mainly on the quality of fish and fish products ranging from quality improvement and assurance to its evaluation. She is currently working on the structural and functional changes of muscle proteins and their interactions with other food components.
