RTD 1 Seafood and human nutrition

RTD Pillar 1 is coordinated by Professor Gertjan Schaafsma.

He is part-time professor of nutrition at the Wageningen University, The Netherlands, and connected to TNO Nutrition and Food Research, The Netherlands, as a senior nutrition consultant. He has 11 years experience as manager of the Nutrition Physiology Department of this institute and is a member of the Dutch National Health Council. His chair at the Wageningen University involves education and research on the development and efficacy testing of functional foods and the safety assessment of novel foods. He is a member of the novel food committee of the National Health Council. In his function at TNO, he maintains contacts with the major food companies at the strategic level.

RTD 2 Seafood and consumer behaviour and well-being

RTD Pillar 2 is coordinated by Associate Professor Karen Brunsø, from the Aarhus School of Business and the MAPP Centre in Denmark. MAPP stands for Market-Based Process and Product Innovation in the Food Sector. Karen Brunsø has carried out research at the MAPP Centre on consumer behaviour almost since its start in 1990, and is author of numerous scientific publications on consumer research and behaviour in relation to food. Especially she has researched food-related lifestyles across Europe, and has worked with the implementation of results in food companies. Another focus area has been the understanding of how consumers perceive food quality, how this relates to subjective food quality experience, and how product labels and branding may affect consumers’ food product perceptions.

RTD 3 Seafood safety

RTD Pillar 3 is coordinated by Bill Dore, Marine Institute, Ireland. 

The Marine Instiute is the National Reference Laboratroy (NRL) for microbiological and virological contamination of shellfish for Ireland. He is currently the Team Leader heading up the activities of NRL. He has over 20 years microbiology research experience with 15 years specialising in the public health problems associated with bivalve shellfish consumption. In addition to a wide range of statutory and advisory duties he has extensive experience of managing research projects. He has an extensive publication record in the area of microbial contaminants of bivalve shellfish.

RTD 4 Seafood from source to consumer product

RTD Pillar 4 is coordinated by Dr Joop Luten, Nofima Marin, Norway and IMARES, The Netherlands. He is European Business Developer at the Nofima Marin since October 2003. He was previously head of the Department of Seafood and Aquaculture of the Netherlands Institute for Fisheries Research, a position he has had for more than 15 years. He has more then 25 years management experience in the area of seafood research. Since the first EU framework programme in the nineties he has been coordinator of a large number of EU projects within the FAR, AIR and FAIR programmes. He is manager of QIM-Eurofish, a strategic alliance between a number of European seafood research institutes in the area of quality assessment of fish. He has been organising three important international seafood conferences; in 1992, 1995 and 2002. Besides a substantial number of scientific publications he is first editor of two books: Seafood from Producer to Consumer. Integrated Approach to Quality, Elsevier Science, 1997, 686 p and Quality of Fish from Catch to Consumer: labelling, monitoring and traceability, Wageningen Academic Publishers, 2003, 460 p.

RTD 5 Seafood from aquaculture

RTD Pillar 5 is coordinated by Dr Børge Damsgaard, Nofima Marin, Norway. He has a position as a principal scientist. He has a wide research experience in experimental fish biology since 1990, including studies of physiological and behavioural effects of husbandry and aquaculture systems, using a wide range of methods and species such as Atlantic salmon, Arctic charr, cod and halibut. He has been coordinating a number of research projects and is active in several international projects. He is currently leading a 5-years strategic research program about ethical questions in farmed fish, funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

RTD 6 Horizontal activity Seafood traceability to ensure consumer confidence

This RTD 6 activity is coordinated by Mr. Erling Larsen, DTU Aqua, Denmark. He holds a position of senior advisor. He has experience both as administrator of research and development funds and from other food sectors. He has been working with quality related issues in the fish sector and has coordinated the development of a software production system and traceability projects. He has been a management team member of the CA-FQLM and the EU Tracefish project QLK-2000-00164.
