YOUNG Blocks of activity

Block 1. Intervention on fish protein versus fish oil effects on factors related to metabolic syndrome, bone health and overweight in 20-40 year olds  (months 1-26). A controlled randomized intervention trial (CRIT) on 20-40 year old overweight individuals (n=340) across Europe to distinguish between biologically active components of seafood, i.e., seafood proteins and n-3 lipids, regarding their effects on risk factors for metabolic syndrome, bone health and weight management. This block will start with the development of four diets and a specific food frequency questionnaire for SEAFOODplus (FFQ-SP), which will be followed by thorough interventions. Partners involved are 22.LSH&HI, 17.IPIMAR, 35.UNAV, 15.UCC.

Block 2. Epidemiological research on probable protective effects of fish oil on postpartum depression (months 1-24).

An epidemiological study will be carried out to investigate effects of consumption of seafood constituents on health of mothers and children. During the first 24 months the world’s largest birth cohort will be used to investigate probable protective effects of n-3 lipids on postpartum depression. An effort will be made to find additional funding for this study. Partners involved are 22.LSH&HI and 50.SSI.

Block 3. Epidemiological research on the effects of fish consumption in pregnancy on health  of children and mothers (months 19-60)

First an epidemiological study will be carried out on the effects of fish consumption in pregnancy of women and children´s health 6-8 years postpartum using the results form a cohort study (n=600) in Iceland. An effort will be made to find additional funding for this study. Partners involved are 22.LSH&HI and 50.SSI.

Block 4. Intervention studies with new seafood products (month 19-60)

A CRIT will be carried out to study effects of new fish products on factors related to metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis and overweight. Controlled randomized intervention trials will be performed to investigate effects from new fish products, or specific products from pillar 4, on these health effects of greatest concern in Europe.

Block5. Implementation results (months 50-60)

Implementation of results from the other four blocks will be performed through presentations of the results for health professionals, general public as well as industry and other European target groups as well as by performing actions to change dietary habits of specific groups and testing the outcome of the chosen actions on intake level. All partners are involved.
